Im vergangenen November erschien auf Peanut Butter Wolf’s Label Stones Throw DIMLITE‘s drittes Album: GRIMM REALITY. Das von L.A. aus weltweit operierende Label beschreibt die Arbeit des Schweizer Produzenten so: “Likewise, looking for the remains of a hip-hop influence, or a connection to what’s happening on modern-day dance floors, won’t yield much here. The precedents that spring to mind are all cherished outsiders – Neu, The Residents, Beefheart, Philip Glass – footnotes in mainstream music history but, in an altogether preferable parallel universe, titans of the recent past.”.
Live tritt Dimlite mit dem virtuosen Schlagzeuger JULIAN SARTORIUS auf, der 2011 täglich einen Beat aufgezeichnet und während des ersten halben Jahres in seiner BEAT DIARY veröffentlicht hat. Im zweiten Halbjahr wurden nur noch wenige Beats veröffentlicht – dafür erscheint 2012 auf Everest Records ein Album mit 365 Beats.

FELDERMELDER ist euch Honeys hoffentlich schon wohlbekannt – auch er ist ein Meister der Improvisation. In seinen Livesets baut auf Tracks auf, lässt sie im Spiel über sich hinauswachen und arbeitet neue Facetten und Stimmungen heraus. Auch er hat 2012 viel vor:  es stehen Releases auf Everest Records und Creaked Records an.

P-TESS ist die mit ihrer Reihe THE PUDDLE und ihrer monatlichen Radiosendung MIC SOUNDS NICE seit Jahren Zürich’s Institution in Sachen Rap, Oldschool, HipHop und Dubstep. J.SAYNE ist Mitbetreiber des Plattenladens HUM RECORDS und des Labels Ish Records. Umrahmt wir der Abend von den Honeys THE DEAN SONIKS.

Walter S. Baumann released a wonderful digital album on Lalamusik in 2010. In the past year, 12 videoclips were created for the songs of the album Dust Sparking in the Sun – by some of the visual makers behind Pixelpunx, Aawesome, Bildstörung and well, myself… The footage for What U Get was made in the Twilight Zone during a full moon night.

‹Kultur digital› vermittelt Einblicke in eine Kulturwelt im Wandel. Eine Publikation und eine Tagung thematisieren diesen Wandel.

Die Digitalisierung verändert die Art und Weise wie wir miteinander kommunizieren, arbeiten und die Freizeit verbringen. Auch das kulturelle Leben ist diesem Wandel unterworfen. Sie erfasst nicht nur die Kulturproduktion, sondern auch die Verbreitung und Vermittlung. Das Migros-Kulturprozent thematisiert diesen Wandel in einer Publikation und einer Tagung. Das Buch «Kultur digital. Begriffe, Hintergründe Beispiele» erschien zur Frankfurter Buchmesse Mitte Oktober 2011.

Die Tagung zum Thema findet am 25. Januar 2012 im GDI Gottlieb Duttweiler Institute in Rüschlikon statt.

Hula Honeys, 2011

Rumors are going on that there will be another Hula Honeys release kinda soon. Here’s the story: a guy called Walter S. Baumann released a wonderful digital EP on a nice’n'tidy netlabel called LaLa Musik in 2010. Their info: “As a youngster he called himself Walti Soundboy and experimented with electronic music. Now, thirty years later, the odd and bearded outsider rediscovers his music material of past days. He dustes the old tapes and brings the music up to date.”

So, this guy Walti came up to the Honeys’ Soult and Nik! a couple of months ago with many far out ideas – like an audiovisual book in 3D, a full length feature film and a record. We decided to take a shot at the latter. First musical snippets should be published soon…

The Stars EP is a message from the outer 8-bit boundaries of the hulaverse. It comes towards you in a proper Chiptune Rave manner: Dance!

Lucerne, Switzerland, based producer, dj and sound designer Daniel Sommer aka Somtek or Schnauz has built himself a reputation as an uncompromising master of the dancefloors somewhere between jungle, breakcore, rave and dubstep.

With the Stars EP, he demonstrates what this means from a glossy, shiny and bleepy point of view: Neon opens up as a bouncy jungle stepper with classic chiptune sounds. Only shortly after, you’ll find youself raving to an arena slammer. Machine reduces the tempo to the groove of a deep oldschool house mover with a cut-up drum break twist. The first digital only track, Skit, is a one shot recording of a live studio session. It takes you way back the your jump’n’run mode. DreamBit comes in 3D and 140bpm. With a light halftime groove, this IDMesque track brings sunshine into the dark. Finally, WhutWhut takes another shot at the hi-speed realm: once more, cut up breaks fill the space between bleeping old school synth sounds, giving way to a glimpse of a timeless moment, only to take right back off towards the sky.

The Dope Crackers 7″ single brings together two exceptional swiss artists for the first time: Bit-Tuner opens with a monster in disguise that comes upon you slowly, but then leaves no doubt about it’s intention. It’s an absolute party crasher, rolling out on a carpet of sounds and noises only to get close and infect you with the „Banda Fever“ – right before a heavy weight bassline drops, tearing down walls as if they were made of paper.

On the flip, Feldermelder throws in a light footed groove that crackles and pops. Adding orchestral and accoustic samples, he slowly builds „Knob Hoff“ to an athmospheric track that goes on and on, constantly meandering between groove and fragile melodies that suddenly give sight on mere accoustic beauty.

DISCO IMPOSSIBLE nannte sich die Veranstaltungsserie im Dock18 für fortgeschrittene Clubbenutzer unter den Bedingungen der Medienkultur. Ein Forschungsprojekt unmöglichen Diskotheken auszukundschaften.

Disco impossible nennt man alles, was umöglich ist! Eine Disco impossible kann ein unerreichbares Ziel, eine unmögliche Beziehung, eine schier unmögliche Situation oder eine Darstellung, die so überhaupt nicht zu funktionieren scheint. In allen unmöglichen Diskotheken dieser Welt liegt die Kraft der Unmöglichkeit aus dem wir ständig Neues schöpfen.

Das Dock18 war im Frühjahr/Sommer 2011 eine solche unmögliche Diskothek.
